Château Haut-Bergey, located in Pessac-Léognan in Graves, Bordeaux, dates back to the 15th century and at its peak, the estate had over 100 acres of vineyards. However, by the mid-19th century wine production had stopped for nearly a century. Today, the estate is owned by Sylviane Garcin-Cathaird — brother of Daniel Chathaird, owner of Château Smith Haut-Lafitte also in Pessac-Léognan — who purchased the Château in 1991. Sylviane undertook a massive restoration of the cellar and the vineyards, starting with conversion to organic, and eventually biodynamic, farming. Château Haut-Bergey became certified in both, and is actually the first estate in Pessac-Léognan to be 100% managed with biodynamics. The vineyards consist of 44 hectares over a mix of gravel, sand and clay soils, 42 hectares of which are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The 2006 Château Haut-Bergey — a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot — is a beautiful wine that displays the majesty of red Bordeaux. The color of the wine is striking: mid-ruby with a faded brick rim. On the nose, aromas of cassis, red berries, cigar box and leather plume from the glass, intermingled with notes of warming and savory spices. On the palate, this delicious Pessac-Léognan offers an enticing gravel-mineral core that the fruit flavors are built around and perfectly framed by fine-grained tannins and a persistent, refreshing acidity. This is a wine that grows in the glass and in the mouth: each swirl and every sip reveal a different nuance to excite and entice. Decant to remove sediment and allow the wine to fully express itself. If you have never experienced the magic of a mature Pessac-Léognan this wine is the perfect introduction, and if you are a seasoned Bordeaux drinker, you'll be amazed by the quality and value of the 2006 Château Haut-Bergey.

With deep color, licorice, smoke, coffee, blackberries, smoke and spice are easy to find. With round tannins and soft textures, this medium/full bodied wine is already showing well.
